For Citizen Science projects that want to get in touch with their users via newsletters, SPOTTERON offers an "e-mail subscription" feature, that any project on the platform can utilize right from the start.
Your User's Data for your Citizen Science Project is safe with SPOTTERON
Since the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), it is not allowed to pass emails around without the informed consent given by the user. The GDPR sets worldwide standards in digital privacy and rights of everyone on the internet and mobile apps.
With the "User eMail Subscription" feature, we have a tool ready that can be used to allow users to give their informed consent for the processing of personal data, e.g. for receiving an email newsletter by your project.
If activated, the User email subscriptions feature displays a dialogue at the first start/login in your Apps. This dialogue includes a customizable text. The purpose of the processing of personal data, the location of data storage and how to withdraw the informed consent should be noted. For example:
Newsletter subscription
We send out a newsletter with news and updates about the project. If you want to receive it, please provide your informed consent that we are allowed to process your data, including your email address, your username/display name, and the form of address/account type. Your data is stored on local computers at the INSTITUTION, ADDRESS, COUNTRY, and processed on www.projecturl.com, hosted by HOSTER COMPANY, ADDRESS COUNTRY for sending out our newsletter. To remove your email address from our mailing list, please use the unsubscribe button in the newsletter or get in contact via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - thank you!
A list of all users who give their consent via the button in the dialogue will be available for download on the Dashboard of the Data Administration Interface for you. The list includes the following information:
* Email Address
* Username/Display name
* Form of address/account type (e.g. Miss, Mister, School Class, etc.)
* Date of subscription

Future updates for this feature include a subscribe/unsubscribe option directly in your Apps in the user profile.
