Multiple Images Feature in a Citizen Science App: brining more details of each observation

Header_blog_v002__MI_2025

Since the release of the SPOTTERON Platform Version 4.0, citizen science & public engagement projects running on the Platform support multiple image upload per data submission. In practice, multiple image upload features are applied by projects for multiple reasons, for example, bringing more attention to the detail (e.g. for particular plant or animal identification) or for visualizing pollution in the same spot (e.g. when adding multiple observations for one spot). Furthermore citizen science project-tailored applications of multiple images allow the observation and provision of photos of various details, like bark, leaves, and flowers on a tree, or photos of a location showing all directions from north to south.

How It Works In The Citizen Science App Space - Upload, Rearrangement, And Removal Of Images

Citizen Science and Public Engagement projects have the option to hold multiple images attached to a data submission. In projects with multiple images per Spot enabled, a second line of thumbnails appears as soon as the first picture is added by the user. With adding more images to the data, the row gets filled up to a project-specific limit of maximum images. Images can also be rearranged or removed by the user in an easy-to-use interface by long-pressing on the interface and drag and drop functionality.

Streaming Data Upload System And Image Gallery Within The Spot (Observation)

On submitting the Spot, the project's database, the Streaming Data Upload System takes over and the data point with all media attached is dynamically uploaded via the background worker, without interrupting the usage of the App. The Multiple Images Feature comes with an image gallery, integrated in the detail view of each user submission in the Apps with interface elements to flip through the images.

New features and functionalities are constantly developed thanks to Horizon Europe project partnerships as well as global projects across Australia, Africa, and America. Customizable extra features and content options are available to extend the functionalities of the App Toolkit to reach your project goals.
