New Section for the Citizen Science App Mein Baum (BUND): Tree Avenues

Trees are essential living beings of our cities and communities. They provide shade, improve air quality, increase biodiversity, and contribute significantly to a higher quality of life. In collaboration with SPOTTERON, BUND (Nature Conservation in Bavaria e.V.) developed the mobile and interactive App Mein Baum (My Tree) to support the protection and sustainable care of trees through Citizen Science. 

Observing Trees in the Citizen Science App Mein Baum

Until now, Citizen Scientists have been observing individual trees in the App and describing them using various classifications: What tree species is it? How old is the tree? Are there any dead branches? Are there animals, fungi, or climbing plants on the tree? ...

With every observation submitted, a digital map of trees continues to grow, helping cities and municipalities, nature conservation organizations, and engaged citizens to better plan protection measures and avoid unnecessary tree felling.

Observing Avenues in the Citizen Science App Mein Baum

In addition to the "Tree" section, the new "Avenue" section makes the recording and observation of tree avenues a second important focus within the App Mein Baum. Tree avenues can be found along many streets, landscapes, and urban areas - with significant ecological, cultural, as well as historical value. 

Citizens can now report avenues in their cities and municipalities: Is the canopy open or closed? What is the health condition of the avenue (healthy and vital, sick and damaged, heavy capping, pest infestation)?

Regular observation makes it possible to detect changes at an early stage. Signs of drought stress, pest infestations, or other impairments can be systematically collected. At the same time, a comprehensive overview of the condition of avenues across different regions of Bavaria is being created.
