Project Messages and Communication in Citizen
Science Apps

On the SPOTTERON Platform, project teams and researchers can reach out to all participants via an integrated communication tool, called "Project Messages". The tool enables projects to disseminate news and updates, inform all participants, send links to everyone to new blog posts or pages, and tell stories. Communication is an important part of every Citizen Science and Public Engagement project. With the Project Messages tool, scientists and communicators can bring inclusivity and activity for citizens in a project to the next level, and keep the user community informed.

‍New European Bauhaus Call & Community Engagement

At SPOTTERON we strongly believe that Citizen Science Apps can serve as a space for interactive collaboration in reaching positive change. Multi-level engagement, participatory processes and transdisciplinary approach are also principles shared by the New European Bauhaus Call which aims to reimagine sustainable living in Europe by bringing various actors together.

communiMap: Communities Observe Their Neighbourhoods in Glasgow - New App on the SPOTTERON App Platform

Imagine that all the little things you observe on a daily basis - your daily commute to work, the trees in your street, or the way rain collects on the road - could contribute to bettering your neighbourhood. That's exactly what communiMap - a new Citizen Science project running on the SPOTTERON Plaform aims to do.

Led by the University of Glasgow's GALLANT project, users are encouraged to pay attention to these details in their environment and share what they observe, fostering awareness among its users and a sense of community with the help of technology. 

communiMap is designed to be flexible and adaptable for any community, even though it is presently being piloted in Glasgow with citizens, community organisations, and schools. With its vibrant colours, ease of use, and wide range of topics, it is aimed at all demographics - the young and the exprienced - connecting people in all walks of life. Because the software creates a venue for co-created knowledge, social scientists, urban researchers, and environmental practitioners have already expressed interest in it.

New Project Design for the Horizon Europe TRANSEATION Project, Marine Science

A few months ago, we at SPOTTERON created beside the COSEA Citizen Science App a new Project Design for TRANSEATION, a marine science project funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme.

The main goal of the TRANSEATION project is to show how human-made structures can effectively protect the health of marine ecosystems. These so called hybrid blue-grey infrastructures represent a new approach to managing ecosystems in our oceans and coasts. Blue-grey infrastructures are not something most people can easily picture. Our challenge in creating the new project design was to find a way to represent them that is abstract yet understandable. 

We developed a system and designed structures: organic structures (structures resembling sea plants and corals) and human-made structures (constructed, pattern structures), as well as marine organisms (fish, jellyfish, corals) that appear between and around the structures.

‍As we regularly come across excellent project funding opportunities and conference calls for our internal list, we’ve decided to share these updates with you in our newsletters and on our website from now on. The range of topics covers everything from Citizen Science and public engagement, as well as nature conservation, or even art calls.
