The finalist 2020 for the Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science Australia has been announced. Congratulations to Team Brush Turkey who are listed with the BrushTurkey app, which is running on the SPOTTERON platform!

Check out this great video by Australian Museum:

The app was launched in 2018 and has since had an impressive 10.000 observations! No wonder, as the brush turkey is a fascinating bird:
Once a rare species due to overhunting, the Australian Brush-turkey is now commonly found in urban areas on Australia’s east coast. They are large birds with a wingspan of about 85 cm, black feathers and a red head. The males build huge nest mounds on the ground out of leaves, twigs, and other compostable material, which are then visited by local females, for mating and egg-laying. The male works tirelessly, collecting material from all around, and also diligently repelling rival males, which are keen to usurp his position. The effort involved eventually wears him down, and he will ultimately be defeated by a new king.

Are you a birder and would like to find out more about the brush turkey? Have you seen any in you back yard?
Let us know in the app!
