SPOTTERON AUTUMN UPDATE I DATA QUALITY IN CITIZEN SCIENCE
Data quality is an essential part when running a Citizen Science app. With the SPOTTERON Data Quality Pack, we bundle a range of advanced features for every Citizen Science App on the SPOTTERON platform, that aim to increase the data quality level in all projects:
SPOT DATA VISUALIZATION
CHECK & LOCK DATA TOOL
Like with all feature packs on the platform, all of the included extensions are available without any extra costs for all running apps. Citizen Science projects do not have to re-invent the wheel, all features of the SPOTTERON platform are already included in their new apps from start.
The Data Quality Pack aims to improve the data quality in your Citizen Science project. By including active users directly in the app for correcting data via the "Edit Mode", the administrative workload is reduced. Editing is available either for both the authors of a submission themselves or by promoting experienced Citizen Scientists to project-wide moderators with the "User Roles" feature. Additionally, with the "Data Flagging" extension, users can report disputed entries, and custom data visualizations and OpenData download options are available, too.
We are looking forward especially to the upcoming "Check & Lock" feature, which allows the science team to have a permanent data-set to be cited in publications and abstracts.
The Data Quality Pack is already included in all SPOTTERON packages without additional costs.
Besides the Data Quality Pack features, a well-designed input dialog is a must for any Citizen Science app. Designing an easy-to-use interface helps to reduce the chance of errors in submissions and guides the Citizen Scientists through the questionnaire when entering data.
Along with Jan Seibert, Barbara Strobl, Simon Etter and H.J. Ilja van Meerveld from University of Zurich, Switzerland, we wrote about the design of the Crowdwater App and how the SPOTTERON platform for Citizen Science apps works in general.
THE TEA BAG INDEX APP JOINS SPOTTERON
A warm welcome to the new released Tea Bag Index Citizen Science app, now running on the SPOTTERON platform! We are especially happy to have this well known Citizen Science research project about soil and the global carbon cycle joining our CitSci network of projects by partner across Europe and beyond.
The first spots by schools have already been contributed and the the first teabags have been burried to observe the decay rate of plant material on the locations.
CITIZEN SCIENCE ON TOUR: CONFERENCES, KIDS UNIVERSITY & IDIV SUMMER SCHOOL 2019
During summer, many conferences on Citizen Science and other events are happening. To spread the word about Citizen Science and share our experience in creating interactive Citizen Science apps, we had quite a schedule this year. We presented the SPOTTERON Citizen Science platform at the 5th Austrian Citizen Science conference, at the iDiv Annual Conference 2019 and AGIT 2019.
