Spot-A-Bee, the Citizen Science App about bees and plants in cities, is now also available in Welsh. Croeso!

We're delighted to announce that the Spot-A-Bee Citizen Science app is now available to Welsh speakers! The project aims to determine which plants, flowers, and trees in cities and urban areas benefit our most popular pollinators: the bees.

The Spot-A-Bee app allows you to observe and document any flowers, shrubs, climbers, or trees and the bees on them. Additionally, it contains useful information on those plants and the most common bee species in the UK.

Inclusion in Citizen Science

At SPOTTERON, we value the inclusion of minorities. We are always interested in making the Citizen Science apps running on our platform available to everybody in the world, even if these might be smaller parts of a population.
Making an app in Welsh is, for us, a further step towards that kind of inclusion. We hope that by doing that, more people who are using the app already further not only their interest in the app's topic itself but also appreciate the beauty of the Welsh language and its cultural importance. We also hope that Welsh speakers will find it easier and more appealing to join the app in their native tongue and become new members of this great community of Citizen Scientists.

Sadly, Google and Apple do not support local languages like Welsh in their app stores (yet). In a world where we have all the technological means to cater to smaller groups of the population and ethnic minorities, we should exploit these possibilities more and show that we care.

Local Languages open up possibilities

We look forward to including even more languages in the future, especially "exotic" ones and those that require non-Latin typeset such as Cyrillic (more on that soon!).

The Welsh version of the Spot-A-Bee App was made possible by working closely with our partners, The University of Glasgow and Cardiff University.

Croeso i deulu SPOTTERON!
